The Credit Risk Officer will support the Bank's credit risk management framework by assessing the creditworthiness and risk profile of borrowers and lending facilities.
The role will involve reviewing credit proposals, financial statements, credit reports, repayment performance, collateral information, and other relevant documentation to identify potential risks before credit decisions are made.
The Credit Risk Officer will also monitor the existing loan portfolio, identify deteriorating accounts and emerging credit risks, prepare risk reports, and ensure that credit exposures are managed in accordance with the Bank's approved policies, procedures, limits, and applicable regulatory requirements in Tanzania.
The successful candidate will work closely with Credit, Relationship Management, Finance, Legal, Collections, Internal Audit, and other relevant departments.
Responsibilities
Credit Risk Assessment
- Review credit applications, proposals, and supporting documentation.
- Assess the creditworthiness and financial position of individuals, businesses, and corporate borrowers.
- Analyze financial statements, cash flows, repayment capacity, existing obligations, and other relevant financial information.
- Evaluate proposed lending structures, facilities, limits, and repayment terms.
- Identify key credit risks and recommend appropriate risk mitigation measures.
- Review collateral and security information in accordance with the Bank's policies.
- Ensure credit assessments are properly documented and supported by relevant evidence.
Credit Review & Approval Support
- Provide independent credit risk analysis and recommendations on lending proposals.
- Review credit requests against approved lending criteria, risk appetite, and delegated authorities.
- Identify exceptions, policy breaches, concentration risks, and other concerns for escalation.
- Support credit committees and senior management with accurate credit analysis and risk information.
- Ensure conditions attached to credit approvals are properly identified and monitored.
Portfolio Monitoring
- Monitor the Bank's loan portfolio for emerging credit risks.
- Track delinquency, non-performing loans, arrears, restructurings, and other portfolio indicators.
- Identify early warning signals and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Monitor sector, industry, geographic, product, and borrower concentration risks.
- Conduct periodic reviews of selected credit exposures and portfolios.
- Support the identification and escalation of deteriorating credit relationships.
Risk Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare regular credit risk reports for management and relevant committees.
- Analyze portfolio performance, risk trends, and key credit risk indicators.
- Maintain accurate credit risk data and monitoring records.
- Support stress testing, portfolio analysis, and scenario assessments where required.
- Provide information required for management reporting, regulatory reporting, audits, and risk reviews.
Policy, Controls & Compliance
- Ensure credit activities are conducted in accordance with the Bank's credit policies and procedures.
- Support compliance with applicable banking laws, regulations, and regulatory requirements in Tanzania.
- Identify weaknesses in credit processes and recommend improvements.
- Support internal and external credit reviews and audits.
- Maintain confidentiality of customer and Bank information.
- Promote sound credit risk management practices across the Bank.
Stakeholder Management
- Work closely with Relationship Managers, Credit Analysts, Credit Administration, Collections, Finance, Legal, and other departments.
- Provide guidance on credit risk matters when required.
- Communicate credit risk concerns clearly to relevant stakeholders.
- Participate in credit risk and portfolio review meetings.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Banking, Business Administration, Risk Management, or a related field.
- Professional qualification such as CPA, ACCA, CFA, FRM, or a relevant banking/risk management qualification is an advantage.
- Relevant experience in credit risk, credit analysis, corporate banking, credit underwriting, portfolio management, or a related banking function.
- Good understanding of credit assessment and lending principles.
- Strong ability to analyze financial statements, cash flows, and borrower financial information.
- Understanding of credit risk concepts, portfolio monitoring, and risk mitigation.
- Knowledge of banking regulations, credit policies, and risk management frameworks.
- Strong analytical, numerical, and problem-solving skills.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and financial analysis tools.
- Strong report-writing and communication skills.
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional judgment.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet reporting and review deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify inconsistencies or potential risks.
