The ideal candidate should have strong leadership and problem-solving skills, experience managing logistics operations, and the ability to coordinate people, vehicles, suppliers, customers, and operational resources effectively.

The Operations Manager will oversee the company's daily logistics activities and ensure that operations run efficiently, safely, and cost-effectively.

The role will involve coordinating transportation and delivery activities, managing drivers and operational staff, monitoring fleet performance, supporting warehouse operations, resolving operational issues, and ensuring customer orders are fulfilled within agreed timelines.

The Operations Manager will also monitor operational costs and performance, identify areas for improvement, and work with management to implement processes that improve productivity, service quality, and profitability.

The successful candidate will work closely with customers, drivers, warehouse teams, suppliers, transport partners, finance, sales, and senior management to ensure smooth end-to-end logistics operations.

Responsibilities

Operations Management

  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee daily logistics operations.
  • Ensure goods are collected, transported, handled, stored, and delivered efficiently.
  • Coordinate delivery schedules, routes, vehicles, drivers, and other operational resources.
  • Monitor daily operations and address delays, disruptions, and service issues promptly.
  • Ensure operational activities are performed according to company procedures and service standards.
  • Develop and implement procedures to improve operational efficiency and productivity.

Fleet & Transport Management

  • Coordinate and monitor company vehicles and transport resources.
  • Plan vehicle allocation and utilization according to operational requirements.
  • Monitor driver performance, attendance, routes, fuel usage, and vehicle utilization.
  • Ensure vehicles are properly maintained and available for operations.
  • Coordinate vehicle servicing, repairs, inspections, and maintenance schedules.
  • Monitor fuel consumption and investigate significant variances.
  • Ensure drivers follow company procedures, road safety requirements, and operational instructions.

Delivery & Distribution

  • Monitor delivery schedules and ensure orders are delivered within agreed timelines.
  • Track deliveries and coordinate responses to delays or failed deliveries.
  • Ensure proper documentation for collections and deliveries.
  • Investigate delivery discrepancies, damages, losses, and customer complaints.
  • Coordinate with customers and internal teams to resolve delivery-related issues.
  • Monitor delivery performance and identify opportunities to improve service levels.

Warehouse & Inventory Coordination

  • Support the effective coordination of warehouse activities where applicable.
  • Ensure proper receiving, handling, storage, dispatch, and documentation of goods.
  • Monitor stock movement and coordinate with relevant teams to minimize losses and discrepancies.
  • Ensure warehouse activities follow appropriate safety and operational procedures.
  • Coordinate communication between warehouse and transport teams.

Team Management

  • Supervise, coordinate, and support drivers, warehouse staff, dispatch teams, and other operational employees.
  • Allocate duties and operational responsibilities effectively.
  • Monitor employee performance and attendance.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and operational training where required.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, discipline, and professional conduct.
  • Address operational performance issues in accordance with company procedures.

Customer Service

  • Ensure customers receive reliable and professional logistics services.
  • Respond to operational inquiries and coordinate resolution of customer issues.
  • Monitor customer complaints and ensure timely follow-up.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with key customers and logistics partners.
  • Identify recurring service issues and recommend corrective actions.

Cost & Performance Management

  • Monitor operational expenses and identify opportunities for cost reduction.
  • Track fuel, vehicle maintenance, transport, warehouse, and other operational costs.
  • Monitor key operational performance indicators.
  • Prepare regular operations reports for management.
  • Analyze operational data and recommend improvements.
  • Support budgeting and operational planning activities.

Compliance, Safety & Risk Management

  • Ensure logistics operations comply with applicable laws, regulations, and company policies in Tanzania.
  • Promote safe working practices across transport and warehouse operations.
  • Ensure drivers and operational employees follow health and safety procedures.
  • Identify operational risks and implement appropriate controls.
  • Maintain accurate operational records and documentation.
  • Support investigations into accidents, losses, damages, and other operational incidents.

Process Improvement

  • Review existing operational processes and identify inefficiencies.
  • Introduce practical improvements to reduce delays, errors, waste, and unnecessary costs.
  • Support the use of technology and digital systems to improve logistics visibility and reporting.
  • Establish and monitor operational procedures and service standards.
  • Work with management to improve overall operational performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Transport Management, Business Administration, Operations Management, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in logistics, transportation, supply chain, distribution, fleet management, or operations.
  • Experience in a supervisory or management position is an advantage.
  • Strong understanding of logistics and transportation operations.
  • Experience coordinating drivers, vehicles, deliveries, warehouses, or logistics partners.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Good understanding of fleet and transport management.
  • Ability to monitor operational costs and performance.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Experience using logistics, fleet management, inventory, ERP, or transport management systems is an advantage.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Strong leadership and team-management skills.
  • High level of accountability, integrity, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond effectively to operational emergencies.
  • Knowledge of relevant transport, road safety, and logistics requirements in Tanzania is an advantage.
