We are seeking a motivated and technically curious IT Field Student to join our research organization and provide hands-on support across IT operations, field research activities, computer systems, networks, and digital tools.

The successful candidate will gain practical experience supporting the organization's staff and research teams, troubleshooting IT issues, maintaining computer equipment, assisting with data and systems operations, and supporting technology requirements during field research activities.

This opportunity is suitable for a student pursuing Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related ICT program who is looking to develop practical workplace experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide first-level IT support to staff and research teams, including troubleshooting hardware, software, operating system, and connectivity issues.
  • Assist with the installation, configuration, updating, and maintenance of computers, printers, scanners, mobile devices, and other IT equipment.
  • Support the setup and maintenance of local area networks (LANs), Wi-Fi, internet connections, and basic network infrastructure.
  • Assist IT staff with user account creation, access management, software installation, and routine system administration tasks.
  • Support researchers and field teams with the configuration and use of laptops, tablets, smartphones, GPS devices, and data-collection equipment.
  • Assist with preparing and testing electronic data-collection devices and applications before deployment to research sites.
  • Provide technical support during field research activities, including troubleshooting device, connectivity, and application-related problems.
  • Assist research teams in resolving basic technical issues involving digital survey and data-collection platforms.
  • Support data backup activities and help ensure that important organizational and research-related files are stored securely.
  • Assist with routine maintenance, inventory, and documentation of IT hardware, software, and other technology assets.
  • Maintain accurate records of IT incidents, equipment issued to users, repairs, configurations, and technical activities.
  • Assist in monitoring system and network performance and escalate complex technical issues to the responsible IT personnel.
  • Support cybersecurity practices, including software updates, antivirus protection, strong passwords, device security, and safe handling of organizational data.
  • Assist staff with basic training and guidance on the use of computers, software, collaboration tools, and other digital systems.
  • Support the IT team in implementing new technologies and improving existing digital workflows.
  • Assist with troubleshooting audiovisual equipment, projectors, video-conferencing systems, and other technology used for meetings, training, and research activities.
  • Perform other IT-related duties assigned by the supervisor.
  • Travel to research sites and provide on-site technical support.
  • Prepare, configure, test, distribute, and collect field data-collection devices.
  • Troubleshoot connectivity and equipment problems in field locations.
  • Support research teams during surveys, interviews, training sessions, and other project activities.
  • Maintain records of field equipment and report damaged, missing, or malfunctioning devices.
  • Coordinate with the central IT team when field-based technical issues require escalation.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Must be eligible for Field Practical Training (FPT) / industrial training where applicable.
  • Basic knowledge of:
  • Windows operating systems
  • Computer hardware and troubleshooting
  • Networking fundamentals
  • Microsoft Office / Google Workspace
  • Internet and email configuration
  • Software installation and configuration
  • Data backup and file management
  • Basic understanding of cybersecurity and responsible handling of sensitive information.
  • Familiarity with smartphones, tablets, printers, scanners, and other digital devices.
  • Experience with digital data-collection platforms such as KoboToolbox, ODK, REDCap, SurveyCTO, or similar tools is an advantage.
  • Basic knowledge of Linux, databases, programming, cloud services, or system administration is an added advantage.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to research and field sites when required.
